Letters while Magruder was a student and soldier until his death in 1863, and letters by his family and relatives after his death in the battle of Gettysburg, July 3, 1863. Magruder's letters contain detailed information on camp life, transportation, Yankee depredations near Culpeper, Va., in 1862, the second battle of Manassas (Bull Run), 1862, and personal affairs. A letter from a cousin to Magruder's family informs them of his death. Other family letters describe Sheridan's raids and frantic efforts of the family to hide foodstuffs, cattle, and personal valuables from the invaders.
